Clothing care that starts with the label

Learn a label-first approach to washing, stain treatment, drying and storing clothing with practical garment care steps.

Read the label first

Find the care label before washing. Its instructions account for the garment’s fibre mix, construction and decoration. If the label requires dry cleaning or a particular temperature, follow it. A general care guide cannot determine the correct treatment for an unidentified fabric.

Prepare clothes before washing

Empty pockets and inspect seams. Separate items according to the label, colour and soil level rather than placing every garment in the same load. Close fasteners when appropriate, and use a laundry bag for items whose label permits machine washing but whose details may catch on other garments.

Treat stains with care

Check the care instructions before applying a treatment. Test an appropriate product on a hidden area if its directions allow, and avoid vigorous rubbing that can spread a stain or damage a surface. Persistent or delicate stains may need advice from a cleaner familiar with the garment.

Dry without losing the shape

Follow the drying symbols. Some garments need to dry flat; others can hang. Avoid assuming every piece is suitable for a tumble dryer. Reshape when instructed and let clothing dry fully before putting it away. Direct heat and strong sun can affect some fabrics and colours.

Store and inspect between wears

Store clothing clean and dry. Use suitable hangers for structured pieces and fold items that stretch under their own weight. Check loose buttons and small seam openings early so a minor repair does not become a larger one. Care works best when it reflects the actual item, not a rule applied to everything.
